Overlooking the Sea of Japan, a traditional property in Yunohama Onsen with over 200 years of history.
Enjoy breathtaking sunsets over the horizon from every Room. A gourmet retreat offering exquisite cuisine made with the rich bounty of Shonai's sea and mountains. Established in 1813, indulge in the renowned natural hot springs to your heart's content.
We stayed again this year, following our visit last year. While many nearby Ryokan have closed, this property has been renovated and reborn with excellent Facility—I felt it is the best in Yuhama. In particular, the Onsen was pure free-flowing hot spring water from the source, with no added water or heating, and it was wonderfully comfortable—I kept sweating for a while even after bathing. Since our Room had a splendid private free-flowing Onsen bath, we enjoyed it many times.Unfortunately, there was light rain and the sea was rough with whitecaps, so swimming was prohibited. However, we are not really at an age to play in the ocean anymore, so we enjoyed walking around the Hotel area instead. There were about ten cats nearby; they were friendly and fun to be around. They had ear marks indicating they had been spayed/neutered, so it seemed the town manages them well. It left us with a good impression of a town that cares for animals.Meals were different from last year: they served them efficiently with fewer staff in a spacious Room renovated from an annex building. The quality felt slightly below last year’s level, though that may simply be personal preference. It also made us feel how challenging operations can be after COVID.We were happy to have a chance to speak in the morning with refined people who seemed to be the proprietress and her son. We would like to visit KAMEYA again next year as well—a place proud of its 200-year history. Thank you very much for your hospitality.
keganikegani 8/1/2026We stayed in the special concept Room we had always wanted to book. From the moment we entered, the view was exactly as we imagined, and it was a wonderful space. From check-in through meals, one attendant took care of us throughout, and we were able to spend our time comfortably. The food was delicious, and we were very satisfied with the in-Room bath and the sauna as well. The sake tasting in the storehouse was also a lot of fun.We also appreciated that check-out is 12:00 by default. We were able to relax properly in the morning too.Since the meals change seasonally, we’d like to visit again in a different season. One small point: our car got quite dirty from the sea breeze after just one night, so it would be even better if some measures could be taken to help keep cars from getting too dirty where possible.Thank you very much!

Long ago, an injured turtle bathed in the hot springs on the sandy beach, marking the beginning of Yunohama Onsen. After recovering and returning to the sea, the hot springs spread throughout the area. This legend is also the origin of the name "Kameya" and has been healing people for approximately 1000 years.

The culinary capital, Yamagata Shonai
The Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture, rich in the blessings of mountains and sea, offers an abundance of seasonal ingredients. At Kameya, we prepare each dish to fully bring out the charm of Shonai's seasonal ingredients and enjoy their diversity.

The annex Ryuguden, built during the Taisho era, is a historical and charming retreat. Here, you will find two sauna areas: "Ryuguden Sauna Umi" and "Ryuguden Sauna Sora." "Umi" features two dry saunas, a reclining Onsen, a cold bath, an open inner terrace, and a lounge, offering a spacious atmosphere with views of the Sea of Japan.
