Overlooking the Kanmon Strait. A traditional Ryokan where you can savor authentic Shimonoseki fugu.

Shimonoseki Shunpanro is a Ryokan that was originally a hospital established by Genyo Fujino, a Dutch-trained doctor and the official physician of the Nakatsu Domain in Oita Prefecture during the early Meiji period. Later, it was transformed into a kaiseki-style Ryokan by Michi, Genyo's wife. It has been used as a regular lodging by people from various fields and social classes, and we display words of appreciation received from our guests. Meiji 21 (1888): Designated as the first licensed fugu cuisine provider Meiji 28 (1895): Venue for the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki Heisei 30 (2018): Venue for the 31st Ryuo Championship match of the Japan Shogi Association The name "Shimonoseki Shunpanro" was given by Hirobumi Ito, a close friend of Genyo, who admired the sight of "many sailing ships floating on the calm spring sea below." Shimonoseki Shunpanro has shared its history alongside Hirobumi Ito. While we offer only 7 Rooms for accommodation, we take pride in our over 100 years of history and feel blessed to hear our returning guests say, "We came again this year."
