In the 10th year of the Showa era, the year following Unzen's designation as Japan's first national park, the Unzen Resort Hotel was established for foreign vacationers.
It was my first stay in a while, and it remains a wonderful Hotel. The approach leading straight from the public road to the main entrance is elegant and picturesque. Since it opened in 1935, the Facilities are not the latest, but that is exactly what gives it a unique charm. The staff’s service was also impeccable. For dinner, we enjoyed classic French cuisine rather than today’s modern fusion style—it was delicious. As is true of Unzen’s tourist areas in general, this historic destination is rich in nature, and I imagine maintaining both the Facilities and the gardens must be challenging for those in tourism. I’m sure there are many difficulties, but I truly hope you will continue to preserve this beautiful Hotel.
鈴虫復活を 8/14/2026Both the building and the staff made this a truly wonderful Accommodation.Every year, I look forward to staying at a classic Hotel for my birthday, and this time I chose this Hotel for my stay.After arriving at Nagasaki Airport by plane, I took a local bus to the Hotel. Transportation was running as usual, but the weather wasn’t great, so I ended up arriving early.I stopped by hoping you could store my luggage until check-in, and a staff member warmly welcomed me at the entrance. They kindly lent me towels out of concern for my wet bags, and I was able to wait in the library until check-in. They also accommodated an early check-in, which allowed me to relax in my Room and recover from the trip.For dinner, I chose a Western full-course meal. In a calm atmosphere with attentive service, I thoroughly enjoyed an excellent meal. The dessert cart was especially fun because there were so many options to choose from. The bread was served warm—soft and delicious—and I ate it quickly; they kindly offered more, but after finishing dessert I felt completely full, so in hindsight it was probably best not to overindulge even though it was so good.In the basement there is an Onsen with both an indoor bath and an outdoor bath (not large), and I was very happy to be able to enjoy an Onsen while staying at a classic Hotel.Although I traveled alone, everything—from check-in to check-out, including during meals—was extremely comfortable, and it helped me feel refreshed and ready to do my best for another year.I would love to visit again. Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience.

The unique three-story architectural style inspired by Swiss chalets has become a model for Unzen's urban development. The dignified entrance is flanked by deep green foliage on both sides. Upon stepping inside, a grand staircase with an open ceiling greets you. You can sense the breath of a bygone era through the imposing beams used throughout the front lobby, lounge, and other areas of the building, as well as the polished texture of the handrails and columns.
This building was registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property (No. 42-0019) on January 31, 2003, by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, as it is considered a valuable national asset and plays an important role in conveying the sensibilities of the early Showa era to the present day. Enjoy a moment of relaxation, wash away the fatigue of your journey in the Onsen waters... Please unwind and relax.
