An Accommodation where you can more deeply experience the charm of cultural heritage. Enjoy an extraordinary moment in a serene space where history lives on.

Yanagawa is a beautiful water city where 930 km of canals, unchanged since the Edo period, spread throughout the town and boats glide by. The Tachibana family has long stood alongside Yanagawa’s history. During the Edo period, Ohana began as a villa of the Tachibana family, lords of the Yanagawa Domain. From the Western-style building constructed in the Meiji era as an authentic guesthouse, you pass through to a grand 100-tatami hall—beyond which lies a magnificent garden composed solely of pine trees. With the renewal of our accommodation wing, we are being reborn as a space where you can more fully enjoy the appeal of cultural properties still preserved by descendants of this former daimyo family. Making use of our distinction as Japan’s only nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty where you can stay—a Ryokan with dining—we offer activities and moments that let you feel the history and stories of the daimyo family (the Tachibana family).

  • With its rich history and tradition, along with the pleasant hospitality of the young staff, we were able to spend a truly comfortable time.I have heard that maintaining a historic building involves many challenges, but I sincerely hope it will be preserved just as it is for years to come.A clean Room, delicious meals, and a wonderful gardenWe would love to visit again.

  • I traveled solo. Thank you for upgrading my Room; the meals and hospitality were wonderful, and I was able to spend a truly soothing time. Most impressive were the designated cultural property buildings and gardens that have been preserved for centuries. The view from the grand hall was especially stunning, and since there were no other guests at that time, I enjoyed the luxury of having it all to myself. The view from my Room was also magnificent. The food was excellent overall, but breakfast in particular was outstanding—I was genuinely impressed. While some of the younger staff seemed a bit inexperienced, they were polite and sincere. The more experienced staff were wonderfully attentive and considerate, making my stay even more enjoyable. Throughout my visit, I could feel how proud and respectful the staff are toward this historic cultural property. I hope it will be preserved and passed down for many years to come. I would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much!

Yanagawa, the City of Water

Yanagawa is a water town where canals called “horiwari” spread throughout the city and boats glide along the waterways. Its scenery is beautiful in every season as time passes. We also recommend arriving from Yanagawa Station by river cruise. The canals are also connected to the Ariake Sea, which has Japan’s largest tidal range. The Ariake Sea is about a 15-minute drive from Ohana.

Exclusive to overnight guests, the Taigetsukan Terrace is open in the evening. As its name suggests, it is also a spot where the moon looks especially beautiful as it nears the full moon. The moon reflected on Shotoen Garden is exceptionally stunning.

  • Noh Performance

[Held on September 13 & 14] “Grand Hall Gozennoh” — Experience Noh in a Lord’s Mansion

Immerse yourself in gardens and architecture preserved over centuries, and spend a moment experiencing Noh—an art form passed down for more than 600 years.
At the Ohana Noh performance, held in the grand hall of a former daimyo residence, there is nothing separating the stage from the audience. From the performers’ breathing and footwork to the subtle movement of their costumes, you can feel every detail up close—where Noh’s inherent stillness, power, and beauty unite with a celebrated scenic garden to create an unforgettable performance.

    【The Samurai Class and Noh】
The Tokugawa shogunate designated Noh as the official ceremonial performing art of the samurai class, and Noh stages were installed in daimyo residences throughout Japan.
The Noh stage that remains in Ohana’s grand hall is a rare treasure that has carried on this daimyo tradition for over 100 years.
Records also show that successive lords not only watched performances but also enjoyed performing Noh together with their retainers.

    【2026 Special Program: Noh “Kagetsu”】
A father who was separated from his child in early years continues searching for his son across many long seasons.
And Kagetsu—a boy who learns performing arts during his travels—dances before those he meets along the way.

The two are reunited unexpectedly, yet their joy is not expressed through many words; it is conveyed quietly through dance and chant.

Neither time spent apart nor feelings held deep within can ever truly be reclaimed.
Even so, people can begin walking together again—carrying what has been lost.

“Kagetsu” portrays parental love and the joy of reunion while leaving a profound afterglow about passing time, life’s transience, and the preciousness of human bonds.

    Program: Noh Dance “Kagetsu”
    Kita School — Ryoichi Kano

    【Dinner: Special Kaiseki】
After the performance, we will serve a one-night-only special kaiseki dinner inspired by scenes and imagery from “Kagetsu.”
Savor the lingering atmosphere of the stage while enjoying the world of Noh through taste as well.
Drinks during dinner are provided in an all-inclusive style.

    【Event Details】
    Dates: September 13 (Sun) & 14 (Mon), 2026
Time: 18:30–21:00 (Doors open at 17:45)
    Venue: Ohana Grand Hall

The setting is Ohana (Yanagawa Domain Lord Tachibana Residence), a space with nearly 300 years of history that is still preserved by descendants of the Yanagawa feudal lord. Inspired by lanterns Ito has made over the years and a yokai picture scroll handed down in the Tachibana family, this art event features special displays of lanterns created for this exhibition as well as previously unreleased works.

    • This year’s theme: “Back to the Origins”
Marking its sixth edition, this year’s theme is “Back to the Origins.” Drawing on historical records of supernatural phenomena depicted in an illustrated scroll passed down through the Tachibana family and on Yanagawa’s living traditions, the exhibition presents a new experience through lantern craftsmanship and art.

    • Lanterns by Ito Gonjiro Shoten
A long-established lantern workshop in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture, founded 210 years ago. The studio continues to produce decorative lanterns for Important Cultural Properties as well as shrines and temples. While preserving tradition, eighth-generation artisan Hiroki Ito also explores new possibilities for lantern-making—expanding into areas such as set design for internationally renowned films and interior décor.

    • The yokai picture scroll handed down in the Tachibana family: Geishu Butayu Monogatari Emaki
Based on a story from the mid-Edo period about a boy named Ino Heitaro who endured a thirty-day contest of wills with yokai. This account is widely known as Ino Mononoke Roku and has been introduced and depicted in many forms. The Tachibana family’s version is a three-volume set painted in the late Edo period, vividly portraying Heitaro’s experiences. The yokai that appeared at his residence night after night are frightening yet somehow endearing. On view at the Tachibana Family Museum during Kikai Yako.

    • The world of Kikai Yako across Yanagawa
Kikai Yako 2026 will also extend to Mitsuhashira Shrine and Poet Kitahara Hakushu’s Birthplace as satellite venues. Reimagining Yanagawa’s kappa legends; poet Hakushu Kitahara’s world of words; and local folklore, literature, and history through nighttime lantern installations, it offers a special experience—traveling through waterside Yanagawa while encountering both mystery and beauty.
