  • I stayed here for a one-night, two-day solo trip. Since it was before an event in Hagi, there were fewer guests, and I was able to relax in peace and quiet. What I especially liked: - The building, garden, and Room are wonderful - All staff were kind while keeping a comfortable distance - Everything is very well cleaned - The food is delicious (they make an effort to serve hot dishes hot) - The souvenirs sold in the lobby are greatOne small downside: - No cold drinks are sold inside the property (one bottle of water is provided; otherwise you need to order drinks with meals or buy them in advance at a convenience store, etc.)Solo travel can sometimes feel a bit tense, but I was able to truly relax here. The bath is compact but extremely clean with a nice atmosphere—more than enough for me. There was also a wide selection of alcoholic drinks at dinner (extra charge), and the meat was very tender. I would love to visit again.

The Birthplace of the Meiji Restoration - Written by Eisaku Sato
View Hagi from the Historic Property Tokimoe.

The Land Where the Meiji Restoration Stirred - Written by Eisaku Sato The stone monument titled "The Land Where the Meiji Restoration Stirred," erected in 1968 at Shoin Shrine to commemorate the centennial of the Meiji era, bears the calligraphy of then-Prime Minister Eisaku Sato. Eisaku Sato had a deep connection with Yoshida Shoin, as Sato's great-grandfather, Kansaku Sato, was said to have been a mentor to Shoin. The calligraphy, currently on display in the exhibition room, still shows red pencil lines used to trace the title. The idea for erecting the monument was proposed by Tsunekichi Koto, the founder of Tsunemoe, who was known by the nickname "Thunderclap."

Hagi Journey

Hagi is a castle town built on a delta formed by the Matsumoto and Hashimoto Rivers, overlooking the Sea of Japan. Hagi, home to five World Heritage Sites, welcomes travelers with the motto, "The spirit of Japan resides here." The town of Hagi is filled with an atmosphere that soothes the hearts of visitors. Shoin Shrine, dedicated to the late Edo period thinker Yoshida Shoin (established in 1907), is located within a sacred area that includes Shokasonjuku Academy (a World Heritage Site), which produced many individuals who led Japan into the modern era from the late Edo to Meiji periods. Jokichi Koto, the founder of Tomoe, played a significant role in the establishment of Shoin Shrine in 1955.
