Our family has been coming here for four generations since the early days, and this time the timing worked out, so I visited with my mother and cousin on a trip for three.With its thoughtful design for elderly guests, meals that make the most of excellent ingredients in a satisfying yet not excessive amount, and a spotless bath area kept clean with frequent cleaning, it truly is a wonderful, prestigious Accommodation.Most places have one or two little moments that make you think “Hmm?”, but from arrival to departure everything was comfortable, making for an excellent stay.Next time, around autumn, I’m hoping to visit again on my own for a change of pace—or perhaps with just my son.
koozaki 7/5/2026There are three types of Onsen, and all of them had the perfect temperature—we were very satisfied.Both the Chinese-style dinner and the breakfast buffet were delicious.The ginger ale–flavored shaved ice in the lobby lounge was especially refreshing and tasty, perhaps because it was so hot!

Introduction of the Accommodation
Relax on a hot spring journey exuding Japanese elegance along the banks of the Hida River.
Gero Onsen has healed the hearts and bodies of many people throughout its long history. We hope to be a hot spring destination cherished by young people, appreciating nature's blessings and preserving what our predecessors have built. Our joy lies in our guests experiencing the four seasons of Gero, relieving daily fatigue, and wholeheartedly enjoying extraordinary moments.
Alongside Kusatsu and Arima, Gero Onsen is one of Japan's three famous hot springs. Discovered during the Enki era (901–923 AD), it was renowned as a healing hot spring and reportedly attracted 30,000 visitors annually during the Edo period. The name is said to originate from the establishment of the "Shimotome Station" on the official road connecting Kyoto to Hida, which eventually evolved into "Gero."
The Origin of Suimeikan
In Showa 5, with the opening of Gero Station on the Takayama Line, the predecessor foresaw the development of the hot spring area 'Gero' and decided to purchase land in the Koda district to operate a Ryokan. On June 25, Showa 7, our property opened along the Hida River. The name of the Ryokan was decided as Suimeikan, symbolizing the steam of hot water rising from clear water, combining 'water' and 'brightening'. It became a fitting name for a Japanese Ryokan born in this picturesque location.
