A log cabin-style Hotel with lake views from every room, where you can fully enjoy the nature of Lake Chuzenji.

Chūzenji Kanaya Hotel is located within Nikkō National Park, the birthplace of resort life and fly fishing, nestled in the forest by Lake Chūzenji. Designed by Canadian architect J. Sturges, it features a Western-style log house using abundant premium wood from Canada. Guests can also enjoy traditional French cuisine from Kanaya Hotel and a separate scenic Onsen. It is an ideal resort hotel to escape the city's hustle and immerse in nature.

  • To escape the Tokyo heat, I visited Oku-Nikko again this year. With concerns about bears, I chose this Hotel because both the open-air bath and the guest rooms felt safe and reassuring. It was my first stay in several years, and perhaps due to the renovation, the room, baths, and lounge were all very clean, making for a comfortable Hotel stay. The meals were delicious; if I had to mention one thing, I would have appreciated a Japanese-style option on the second night of my two-night stay. I would definitely like to stay again.

  • I had been curious about this place for some time, and this was my first stay. It rained from the night of our arrival through the next morning on our one-night, two-day trip. However, the Onsen had wonderfully warming water with a sulfur scent—this is what an Onsen should be! The lounge was quiet, and I was able to relax so much that I lost track of time. The coffee and tea were also delicious. Dinner was a course with one main dish, but it was more than filling, and I worked hard to finish the dessert no matter what. When I informed them of my dietary restrictions in advance, they accommodated me in great detail and were very considerate—truly what you would expect from a long-established Hotel. I would definitely like to visit again.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Exterior

During the mid-Meiji period, foreign diplomats frequently visited Lake Chuzenji, drawn by its abundant natural beauty, particularly the opportunity for "trout fishing." In Western countries, angling with artificial flies was considered a gentleman's pastime, and Lake Chuzenji was the perfect summer retreat. Thomas B. Glover, a Scotsman known for the "Glover House" in Nagasaki, imported brook trout eggs at his own expense, hatching and releasing them into Lake Chuzenji. This eventually led to the establishment of Japan's first social club, the "Tokyo Angling and Country Club," in 1924. Members of the club included distinguished figures such as members of the Imperial family, high-ranking officials from Japan and abroad, and prominent businesspeople. They gathered at the clubhouse built on the site of Glover's former residence by the lake, enjoying the club life to its fullest. It is said that Shinichi Kanaya, the then-president of Kanaya Hotel, also played a role in the club's activities. The predecessor of Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel, the "Nikko Kanko Hotel," was founded in 1940. After a complete renovation, it became the current log cabin-style Hotel in 1992. In spring, the blooming of Yashio azaleas, katakuri flowers, rhododendrons, and mountain cherry blossoms heralds the season. Summer is enveloped in the fresh greenery of birch and oak trees. Autumn offers breathtaking natural art in the form of vibrant autumn leaves, and winter brings a sky full of stars, marking the start of winter sports. Here, you can experience the true resort life that has continued since the Meiji era.

Restaurant

The entrance to the dining room is located at the end of the first-floor hallway. Upon entering, the bar corner is on the right, and the dining room extends to the left. Enjoy the hotel's proud French cuisine in a serene atmosphere surrounded by trees. With large windows facing the lake, you can have breakfast while gazing at the Mizunara forest bathed in the morning sunlight. This refreshing experience is unparalleled.

Open-air bath
Facility

The bathing area has been expanded, along with the introduction of partial floor heating, the establishment of a new low-temperature sauna room, and a well-equipped powder corner, ensuring greater comfort to enjoy the Onsen, a pride of Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel. Of course, we recommend the outdoor bath. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature, from sunlight filtering through the trees during the day to the sparkling starry sky at night.
