A Hotel on a hill overlooking the west shore of Lake Towada, filled with the warmth of Akita cedar.

Towada Hotel is located on a high plateau on the western shore of Lake Towada, offering a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding beech forests that showcase the beauty of nature throughout the seasons. The renovated main building revives authentic Japanese architecture made of Akita cedar by the craftsmanship of 80 traditional carpenters, while the newly constructed annex features tranquil Western-style rooms, available to suit your preferences. The cuisine is a fusion of Japanese and Western styles, incorporating local ingredients.

  • It is a wonderful building, and I was able to relax in a clean, spacious Room. The meals were all delicious, featuring local ingredients and seasonal dishes. The bath facilities were also excellent—the large public bath was very spacious, and amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, body soap, facial cleanser, and lotion were well stocked. There was also a lounge where we could enjoy coffee and tea, which was very comforting. From the warm welcome to check-in, the restaurant service, and seeing us off at departure, everyone at the Hotel provided outstanding hospitality and took great care of us.I felt refreshed both physically and mentally. Thank you very much.

  • The entrance to the main building, a designated Important Cultural Property, was beautifully crafted and truly captivating.I was deeply moved that such a wonderful structure has been preserved and maintained to this day.Check-in was handled with exceptional care and clarity, the guidance to our Room was courteous, and during meals they spoke briefly while still providing thorough explanations—everyone on staff was very pleasant. From the open-air bath, we could look out over Lake Towada and relax in the midst of magnificent scenery. The meals were carefully prepared using local ingredients and were delicious. The two of us finished everything at both breakfast and dinner. We were able to spend a peaceful time. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Towada Hotel Main Building designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

Towada Hotel was constructed as part of a tourism development initiative following the establishment of Towada National Park in 1936 (renamed "Towada-Hachimantai National Park" in 1956) and was completed in the autumn of 1938. The main building, a two-story wooden structure with a basement, features a unique architectural style that incorporates abundant local forestry resources such as Akita cedar. It is built on a stone-piled platform with horizontally arranged halved logs. Inside, the entrance hall boasts an open ceiling design with cedar logs aged 65 to 85 years, and a beech pillar approximately 100 years old stands prominently at the entrance. The entrance stepping board is made of zelkova wood, and the stone-paved floor is crafted from stones sourced from the shores of Lake Towada.

The delicate Kumiko transoms and the boat-bottom ceiling made of cedar bark using cedar logs of the same diameter create a space befitting the "Akita Sugi House."

Each Room features unique tokonoma and tokowaki designs, utilizing a variety of materials and techniques. The fittings and tatami mats are also specially crafted for each Room, showcasing the creativity and skill of traditional carpenters, providing a distinctive ambiance to each Room.

"Towada Hotel Honkan" was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on May 16, 2003, under Criterion Three "Items not easily reproducible."
