Reviews 12th placeReview Ranking in Tokyo
  • We stayed as a couple to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. For us, having held our wedding reception here 30 years ago, the Imperial Hotel is a special place that has quietly witnessed the important milestones of our lives. This time we stayed in the Tower building, and the view from our Room was truly wonderful. Simply spending time looking out over Tokyo felt incredibly luxurious. What made us happiest most of all was that our Room had been discreetly upgraded. We were genuinely touched by this thoughtful gesture and felt the warm hospitality that is so characteristic of the Imperial Hotel. The “Old Imperial Bar” we visited in the evening was also fantastic. Enjoying drinks in a space filled with history made us feel as though we were savoring the very time the Imperial Hotel has cherished over the years. In the morning, we dined at “Les Saisons.” Not only were the dishes beautifully prepared with great care, but breakfast in such a calm setting was exceptional—an unforgettable moment that let us gently look back on these past 30 years.During our stay, we were also able to see the nostalgic banquet hall where we held our reception 30 years ago.To return to this same Hotel 30 years later and look upon that place together—saying, “A lot happened, but we were happy”—was more than enough to fill our hearts.Even after three decades, it remains unchanged—still there for us—and once again watched over another milestone in our lives: the Imperial Hotel. We were deeply moved not only by its outstanding service and cuisine, but also by its accumulated history and heartfelt warmth toward people. We are truly glad we chose to stay here on such a special anniversary. We would love to return again for future milestones in life.Thank you very much for such a wonderful time.

  • I’ve wanted to stay here for a long time. Everything was excellent. Not only the Room, but also the gym, pool, and amenities—everything was wonderful. I was also able to use the bathroom and sauna, so after swimming I could freshen up before returning to my Room. They even provided a swimsuit dryer… it was an unexpected and very welcome touch. All of the Hotel staff—from the entrance to the front desk and in-room staff—were elegant and smiling, and their service was so courteous it almost made me feel shy. We didn’t dine this time, but I’d like to next time. Sightseeing in Tokyo always feels rushed, but I’d love to enjoy a Multiple Night Stay and take things slowly. It was a great trip—thank you very much.

The Story of the Imperial Hotel

The Imperial Hotel was established in 1890 (Meiji 23) in Hibiya, Tokyo, serving as Japan's guesthouse to welcome distinguished guests from abroad. Since then, it has always warmly welcomed guests as a stage for gatherings.

Exterior
Imperial Hotel and Eiichi Shibusawa

The Imperial Hotel was established by Eiichi Shibusawa and Kihachiro Okura under the directive of Kaoru Inoue, the Foreign Minister during the Meiji government, to build equal diplomatic relations. Eiichi Shibusawa managed the hotel for 19 years since its opening in 1890 and served as its first president. The corporate philosophy of the Imperial Hotel deeply resonates with Shibusawa's teachings, and this DNA continues to be inherited in the hearts of its employees to this day.

Exterior
Frank Lloyd Wright and the Imperial Hotel

The second main building of the Imperial Hotel (commonly known as the "Wright Building") was completed in 1923 (Taisho 12). It was the first Hotel architecture in Japan designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most renowned architects of the 20th century. Although it faced the Great Kanto Earthquake on its opening day, the Property became more than just a place to stay during the Taisho and Showa eras. It served as a hub for cultural exchange between the East and the West, connecting nations and people. Additionally, numerous vibrant Hotel cultures that adorned social gatherings were born here. The brilliance and charm emanating from within the Hotel, combined with the unique beauty of Wright's architecture, earned it the title of "Jewel of the Orient," leaving people in awe and wonder until its closure in 1967. Wright's legacy continues to be cherished to this day. Currently, only the central entrance of the Wright Building has been relocated to the Meiji Mura in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture.

Saul
"Buffet cuisine" originated from the Imperial Hotel

The widely known dining style called "Viking" actually has its roots in the Imperial Hotel. In 1957 (Showa 32), the then-president Tetsuzo Inumaru took notice of the unique concept of the Nordic traditional cuisine "smorgasbord," which allows diners to "eat as much as they like of whatever they like." He instructed Nobuo Murakami, who was training at the Hotel Ritz in Paris at the time (and later became the 11th head chef), to study this cuisine in Copenhagen. On August 1 of the following year, Japan's first buffet restaurant, "Imperial Viking," was opened. The name "Viking" was inspired by the pirate movie "The Vikings," which was released in the same year. At the Imperial Hotel, August 1 was designated as "Viking Day" in 2008 (Heisei 20), marking the 50th anniversary of the birth of "Imperial Viking."
